Guests will discuss ways educators are navigating student free speech issues and addressing controversial topics—within the confines of legislative efforts to limit the discussion of gender and race in schools. In our current environment of partisan polarization, educators often struggle to balance allowing students to address important (but controversial) issues in the classroom with the reality that such discussions can lead to political or legal consequences for teachers.Yet in the eighth edition of the Knight Foundation’s Future of the First Amendment project, the 10,098 high school students and 672 teachers surveyed overwhelmingly express support for free expression, even when the opinions conveyed are unpopular or offensive.Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions relevant to their own experiences in districts and schools.
