Memphis-Shelby County school board updates: Sign up to stay informed

Since the school year began in August, the Memphis-Shelby County school board has made big decisions impacting thousands of children, families, teachers, and other school staff. To keep you informed of important school board happenings going forward, Chalkbeat Tennessee is launching a text messaging service to share the latest school board news.
Just in the last few months, district officials have closed, merged, and relocated schools and programs as part of the sweeping “Reimagining 901” facilities plan. They’ve implemented district policies and efforts to keep staff and students safe during the pandemic. They’ve approved a controversial contract allowing sheriff’s deputies to continue patrolling schools.
We want to make it easier for busy parents, students, and Memphians to stay apprised of these important school board happenings every month. We hope the texting service will keep you informed, better able to hold district officials accountable, and more empowered to start community conversations about what public education should look like in Memphis.
Sign up for our monthly texts below and let us know if you have any questions about Memphis-Shelby County Schools. We’ll text you twice a month, once before a board meeting to let you know it’s coming up, and once after with the biggest news.
Memphis-Shelby County Schools typically hosts its monthly board meetings at 5:30 p.m. the last Tuesday of each month at the Board of Education building. The meetings are also available for streaming on the district’s Facebook page. Find this year’s board meeting schedule here.
